Annual statewide effort promotes litter pickup on state’s roadways, shorelines
Each year, thousands of Arkansans volunteer to pick up litter along the state’s roadways and waterways during Keep Arkansas Beautiful’s (KAB) Great Arkansas Cleanup (GAC) to improve the appearance and environmental quality of their communities. This year’s fall litter-pickup campaign will run from Sept. 8 through Oct. 31.
All Arkansas communities are encouraged to get involved in this annual cleanup effort. Those who would like to learn more about organizing a litter-pickup event in their community or to volunteer with a local event can visit KeepArkansasBeautiful.com, email email@example.com or call toll-free 888-742-8701.
Last year’s GAC featured 167 local events across the state. More than 10,500 volunteers picked up almost 1 million pounds of litter from roughly 800 miles of roadway, 200 parks and public areas, and 650 miles of shoreline. The volunteer effort provided the state and participating communities a cost-saving value of more than $1 million.
“Individual and community efforts to prevent litter are necessary to keeping Arkansas beautiful,” said Robert Phelps, director of KAB. “Everyone is encouraged to coordinate or participate in the Great Arkansas Cleanup to positively impact civic pride, livability and economic growth in their own communities.”
Once a community signs on to host a Great Arkansas Cleanup event, Keep Arkansas Beautiful will work with that community to organize and publicize the effort. KAB can furnish local volunteers with cleanup materials and supplies, such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests. Other available promotional items and incentives include T-shirts and an opportunity to win a Troy-Bilt® trimmer/blower.
KAB is promoting this year’s GAC using TV, radio and newspaper advertising to increase volunteerism at events around the state and is also providing local coordinators with customizable marketing materials, including posters, public service announcements and news releases.
Keep America Beautiful Inc., the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, and the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department sponsor the Great Arkansas Cleanup. Sponsors help provide needed cleanup supplies for GAC participants.
