Great Arkansas Cleanup 2011

Statewide effort reduces waste on roads and in waterways

Each year, thousands of Arkansans volunteer to pick up litter along the state’s roadways and waterways during Keep Arkansas Beautiful’s (KAB) Great Arkansas Cleanup (GAC) to improve the appearance and environmental quality of their communities. This year’s fall litter-pickup campaign will run from Sept. 10 through Oct. 31.

All Arkansas communities are encouraged to get involved in this annual cleanup effort. Those who would like to learn more about organizing a litter-pickup event in their community or to volunteer with a local event can visit, email or call toll-free 888-742-8701.

Last year’s GAC featured 116 local events across the state. More than 14,000 volunteers picked up 1.7 million pounds of litter from roughly 800 miles of roadway, 101 parks and public areas, and 228 miles of shoreline. The volunteer effort provided the state and participating communities a cost-saving value of nearly $1 million.

“We try to make it as easy as possible for Arkansans to pick up litter and clean up their communities. We stress litter-prevention methods to encourage more volunteers and communities to join our campaign,” said Sarah Wruck, KAB volunteer services coordinator. “This statewide cleanup effort is fueled by proud citizen volunteers who realize the negative consequences of litter to their communities and are committed to working for the cause of beautification.”

Once a community signs on to host a Great Arkansas Cleanup event, Keep Arkansas Beautiful will work with that community to organize and publicize the effort. KAB can furnish volunteers with cleanup materials and supplies, such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests. Other available promotional items and incentives include T-shirts and an opportunity to win a Troy-Bilt® trimmer/blower.

KAB is promoting this year’s GAC using TV, radio and newspaper advertising to increase volunteerism at events around the state and is also providing local coordinators with customizable marketing materials, including posters, public service announcements and news releases.

The Great Arkansas Cleanup is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, Glad Products Co., Keep America Beautiful Inc., Sam’s Club® and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Sponsors help provide needed cleanup supplies for GAC participants.
