Great American Cleanup in Arkansas Youth Poster Contest open to grades K – 5
As communities around the state begin planning their 2012 Great American Cleanup™ in Arkansas events, the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission (KAB) invites students in grades K – 5 to submit art entries in the annual Youth Poster Contest.
KAB, the Keep America Beautiful certified state affiliate in Arkansas, organizes and promotes statewide the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup in Arkansas. This annual spring cleanup event is when communities focus on local beautification efforts, flower- and tree-plantings, park improvements, trail-building, Main Street rehabilitations, litter pickups, and other activities in advance of the tourism/vacation and festival season.
KAB sponsors the poster contest to involve students, to increase awareness of the Great American Cleanup in Arkansas, and to educate the public about the importance of a clean and beautiful community in promoting economic development and environmental quality of life.
“Each year, we continue to be impressed and inspired by the inspired creativity of Arkansas’ youth,” said Sarah Wruck, volunteer services coordinator for KAB. “This contest provides children an opportunity to use their imagination and also makes them more aware of the importance of keeping their hometowns clean and green. We’re looking forward to seeing what the kids will create this year.”
Schools across the state are encouraged to involve all students in grades K – 5 in this educational art contest. Home-schooled students, 4-H clubs, Scouts and other youth organizations are also invited to submit entries in the competition.
Posters entered in the contest should depict an Arkansas that is clean and green with flowers and trees planted, parks and public areas cleaned up, trails built, downtowns improved, and litter picked up. The artwork should be two-dimensional and can be in any medium (pen and ink, watercolor, crayon, marker, pencil, etc.). Entries must be on standard 8½” x 11″ paper.
Prizes for the contest will be awarded in two divisions: Grades K – 2 and Grades 3 – 5. Teachers are asked to select one poster per class to be submitted for statewide judging. Winners will be recognized in their local communities by KAB and Great American Cleanup in Arkansas representatives. The winning art will be displayed at KeepArkansasBeautiful.com and Facebook.com/KeepArkansasBeautiful and may be used in other Great American Cleanup in Arkansas promotions. Posters sent in for judging will not be returned to students.
