Volunteers collect more than 293,000 pounds of litter during Great American Cleanup
LITTLE ROCK (June 7, 2016) – Arkansans collected more than 293,000 pounds of litter during this year’s Great American Cleanup™ in Arkansas, a nationwide program of Keep America Beautiful and promoted statewide by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission (KAB).
An additional 836,000 pounds of bulky waste were collected during the three-month spring cleanup beginning in March. Volunteers contributed nearly 35,000 hours cleaning 595 miles of roadway and 187 miles of waterway. Nearly 4,000 tires were collected, and more than 3,000 trees, shrubs and flowers were planted. More than 45,000 pounds of electronics were recycled.
“We are impressed with the dedication shown by this year’s Great American Cleanup coordinators and volunteers,” said Liz Philpott, CVM, volunteer program manager at KAB and statewide coordinator of the Great American Cleanup in Arkansas. “Nearly 7,000 Arkansans gave their time and energy to pick up the trash and litter left behind by others. We are grateful for the work they have done to help keep Arkansas clean and green.”
The Great American Cleanup is one of many events where KAB provides cleanup materials and supplies such as Glad® trash bags, gloves, safety vests and T-shirts. Each year, Arkansans statewide dedicate their time to improving the quality of life in their communities by volunteering for and coordinating litter-pickup, recycling and beautification events.
