Involving Yourself and Others in Community Improvement

Everyone deserves to live in a community that is healthy, safe, clean and beautiful, but we all have a role to play in achieving this goal. From litter cleanup events to sharing good ideas with other communities around the state, there are a variety of ways you can help reduce waste and beautify the environment by involving yourself and others in community improvement activities in your area.

Spring Great American Cleanup in Arkansas

The Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community-improvement event. Arkansas has historically been a leader in volunteerism during this three-month springtime effort by organizing over 300 events that involved more than 17,000 volunteers and 45,000 hours of donated time. This spring, improve your community by participating in your local Great American Cleanup in Arkansas.

Fall Great Arkansas Cleanup

Each fall, an estimated 10,000 Arkansans volunteer for the statewide Great Arkansas Cleanup litter pickup event. Through their efforts this past year alone, litter was picked up from 3,500 miles of roadways, 503 parks and public areas, and 146.1 miles of shorelines; 26 illegal dumps were closed over the last two years. This fall, join a Great Arkansas Cleanup event in your area!

Litter Grabber Program

We believe that just one person can make a huge difference in their community. Our Litter Grabber Program empowers individuals to take action to help keep their communities clean. Arkansas residents can request a free Cleanup Kit, which includes trash bags, gloves, and a t-shirt, to help mobilize volunteers across the state. Whether it’s picking up trash in your neighborhood on a walk, bringing along a trash bag on your next hike, or going to the park to do a quick cleanup, we believe every person can help play a part in reducing and preventing litter.

Adopt-A-Highway

The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program allows groups and individuals to “adopt” a section of Arkansas roadway by pledging to pick up trash and keep it litter-free. Voluntarily maintaining the roadways into and out of your community is another way to be involved in improving your community. Additionally, many communities offer residents the opportunity to Adopt-A-Street or Adopt-A-Spot. Your local street department or parks and recreation department will have more information.

America Recycles Day

Each year on Nov.15, communities across the country come together to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the U.S.. Recycling drives and educational events are scheduled throughout November across Arkansas to help educate Arkansans about the importance of recycling.

Volunteering

Every Arkansan plays an important role in preventing litter, encouraging recycling and promoting scenic beautification. Volunteer today and become involved in making your community a cleaner place to live, work and play!
