Help make Arkansas clean and green by joining the Great Arkansas Cleanup. Each fall, Arkansans get together to remove litter from our state’s roadways, shorelines, parks and public areas for the Great Arkansas Cleanup event. The statewide community improvement campaign runs Sept. 9 – Oct. 31.

During the 2016 Great Arkansas Cleanup, more than 7,000 volunteers worked almost 43,000 hours in communities across the state. The community improvement effort involved 144 events, with volunteers collecting 210,582 pounds of litter from 541 miles of roadways, 1,194 miles of waterways, and 16,251 acres of parks and public areas. The total economic value of the 2016 Great Arkansas Cleanup to Arkansas communities was more than $1.6 million!

Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) National Planting Day and the kick-off for the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Great Arkansas Cleanup take place on September 9, with community-based activities happening throughout the month. National Planting Day celebrates the nature of native plants, trees and flowers in enhancing and enriching communities. Beautiful public places transcend aesthetic appeal to positively impact the lives of area residents, visitors, businesses and institutions. Green spaces restore our communities, helping to make them more environmentally healthy, socially connected and economically sound.

National Planting Day and the Great Arkansas Cleanup mobilize residents and organizations across the state to implement projects to improve the natural and scenic appeal of their communities. This year’s National Planting Day theme is “Keep America Bee-utiful,” with a focus on planting pollinators, in addition to native species. Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. More nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.

To kick off the Great Arkansas Cleanup and celebrate National Planting Day, Keep Arkansas Beautiful is presenting a Troy-Bilt® Colt FT Garden Tiller grant, donated by Keep America Beautiful. The Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light Promise Garden will receive the tiller on September 8 at the garden.
