The Arkansas Shine Awards honors communities across the state that have adopted a comprehensive approach to keeping their hometowns clean and green. The entry deadline is July 31 each year.
Great communities don’t just happen; they are shaped by shared community values and strong leadership. As groups and organizations work together, they demonstrate positive attitudes and actions, and they define and strengthen the community’s quality of life. The result is a sustainable community where environmental and economic improvements reflect its standards and identify it as an exceptional place to live, work and visit.
From curbside recycling offered by city government to local youth groups that pick up litter at a the park to the gardening clubs that maintain sidewalk flower pots downtown, these individual actions and activities are part of a bigger picture of involvement that shows a community’s commitment to civic improvement. It takes all of these seemingly disconnected projects to develop and maintain a community that is clean, green and attractive to tourists and business and industrial prospects. KAB wants to recognize such well-rounded efforts.
Entrants in the Arkansas Shine Awards must be an incorporated city of Arkansas. Entrants will be judged in six population divisions, with one winner in each. The city’s mayor must submit the award entry, although the entry will be expected to summarize all activities in the areas of litter prevention, recycling, beautification and community development, not just city-sponsored programs.
Entries must be postmarked no later than July 31 each year, and winners will be announced in September. Each winning city will receive a specially designed “Shiny” award at a hometown recognition ceremony sponsored by KAB.
The Arkansas Shine Awards is an opportunity for communities to be a part of KAB’s public-awareness campaign, Shine – Keep Arkansas Clean & Green™. The campaign seeks to educate Arkansans about the individual actions – such as not littering, reporting litter or recycling household items like newspaper and plastic bottles – that make a larger impact on the state’s environmental quality of life.
