Great Arkansas River Cleanup Collects Nearly 11,000 Pounds of Litter Volunteer effort will continue through October LITTLE ROCK (Sept. 23, 2014) – Volunteers participating in the Great Arkansas River Cleanup, one of Keep Arkansas Beautiful Great Arkansas Cleanup events, removed approximately 10,500 pounds of litter from the Arkansas River during the third annual event held earlier this month. On Sept. 6, 282 volunteers gathered at 11 locations along the Arkansas River to contribute a combined 844 hours towards litter pickup. For the second year in a row, the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) partnered with Keep Arkansas Beautiful (KAB) to provide cleanup supplies and support for volunteers. Cleanup events were organized by community leaders in Fort Smith, Van Buren, Ozark, Clarksville, Russellville, Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pine Bluff.; Keep North Little Rock Beautiful, an affiliate of KAB since February 2012, initiated the first Great Arkansas River Cleanup in October 2012. Keep North Little Rock Beautiful played a major role in encouraging participants to sign up to expand the movement beyond Arkansas. “We started the Great Arkansas River Cleanup three years ago in North Little Rock with about 50 people. This year we had about eight cities in Arkansas and four in Oklahoma,” said Randy Naylor, chairman of the Keep North Little Rock Board. “We received interest from Kansas as well. We want to make it a full-blown river clean up in the future, but we know it’s not going to happen over night.” Each year, Arkansans donate their time to improving the quality of life in their communities by being a part the Great Arkansas Cleanup (GAC).With more than a month left in the statewide cleanup, all communities are encouraged to continue registering events before the fall campaign ends. Any group or organization in Arkansas can register a cleanup event for their community. Once a community registers a GAC event, Keep Arkansas Beautiful will help organize and publicize the effort. With the help of ADEQ, KAB can provide local volunteers with cleanup materials and supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests. Participants will also be given T-shirts and an opportunity to win a Troy-Bilt® trimmer/blower.Those interested in organizing a Great Arkansas Cleanup event or volunteering at a local event can visit KeepArkansasBeautiful.com, email elizabeth.philpott@arkansas.gov or call 888-742-8701 toll-free for more information.   About the Great Arkansas Cleanup The Great Arkansas Cleanup grew out of an effort that began more than 40 years ago as the Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Cleanup. In 1985, U.S. Sen. Dale Bumpers guided legislation requiring an annual pickup event during the weekend after Labor Day on all federal lands. This law, the Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Act, honors the founder of the event. Mr. Garner continued his advocacy for a clean and litter-free environment as a member of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation board of directors...
